At any one time some 20 to 30 otters calle the harbor home according to the city. Near south t pier along the harbor walk and next to target rock are some of the most popular spots to spy these morro bay sea lebrities. Sea otters were once hunted almost to extinction for their thick pelts. That s where otters like to hang out especially in the morning.

They have about one million hairs per square inch which helps keep them warm in our cold waters. A particularly good spot to see the morro bay sea otters is within the area outlined by the t dock located behind the great american fish company. This number is growing as the sea otter population continues to stabilize in the wake of fur trading. Park in the restaurant parking lot which is available for public use and has ample parking and walk out toward the water.

Sea otter awareness week is drawing to a close but lucky for residents and visitors sea otters live in morro bay year round. Morro rock dominates the landscape of morro bay and you can drive bike or walk right out to it. Sea otters morro bay has an active sea otter population year round. We came here three mornings in a row to see otters with success every time.

The protected inlet of morro bay serves as habitat for about 40 sea otters primarily females caring for pups. The otters can be seen near the south t pier and in the bay near morro rock. This story could have been different.
